Central City is home to all or part of three historic districts: the Central City and South Temple Historic Districts are recognized both locally and nationally, while the Liberty Wells Historic District holds only national designation. Central City landmarks Trolley Square and Liberty Park are also individually listed as historic landmark sites on both the local and national level.
Both types of historic district recognition—local or national—allow property owners to receive state or federal income tax credits (depending on the type of property) for historically appropriate renovations.
Local historic district designation also means that proposed demolitions and exterior changes to significant or contributing properties are subject to review. This helps ensure the preservation of the neighborhood’s valuable historic character. National districts afford no such protections.
